Ahoy, ye scurvy dogs!

Scurvy Dogs

June 21, 2008

Big Sister and I both work for a doctor (she sets his appointments and I manage his medical records). He took us out for dinner last night to celebrate our birthdays. We went to Roy's, a very fancy place in La Jolla that serves Hawaiian fusion food.

They had a separate vegetarian menu! I was so excited when they brought it to the table!

And then, I saw the choices. The entire menu had just two choices WITH a disclaimer that certain menu selections might not be available at all times. How in the hell can only TWO items not be available?

The doctor really wanted me to order an appetizer, so I ordered the fried tofu with some sort of green sauce. I got four pieces and they were excellent! I ate three and gave the other one to him.

For the main course, I settled on something called Mediterranean Cousletta. Or maybe it was coulsetta. I have no idea. But when it arrived, it was almost funny.

I got two small pieces of young broccoli, two teeny spears of asparagus, one flowerette of cauliflower, a teeny carrot split in half, six teeny pieces of cubed mushroom, about 1/4 cup of sauteed spinach, and a piece of polenta about the size of a lid for a large water bottle. Oh, and I got two capers. And the whole thing was covered with about six small curls of Parmesan cheese.

Good thing we stopped for something to drink at the bar on the way in. They serve edamame instead of chips or pretzels, so I had a few of those. Salted with chili powder for an incredible kick.

Here is an example of my cauliflower. It was a lovely purple color, but I only got one small flowerette!

Dessert was amazing. The doctor and I shared this chocolate souffle with real vanilla bean ice cream. I had a few bites and turned the rest over to him.

The presentation of my cousletta (coulsetta???) was lovely, but paying $16 for a few pieces of vegetables seemed ridiculous. So glad it was a gift. It takes a lot of skill to make a meal that small last while everyone else is eating. I cut everything into very small bites and wiped my mouth on the napkin a lot. It was all quite funny.

So it's time to forage for some toast and peanut butter. I have a huge day of packing here, and the lovely purple cauliflower flowerette simply wasn't enough to sustain me into morning.
