Scurvy Dogs

Yay to life-my-way for being the first to identify THIS as jack fruit! I need a snail-mail address to ship off the prize! Email me, Katherine.

Jack Fruit

It's actually a relative of the mulberry tree. Yeeee!

It's the largest of all fruits grown on trees. Here is a fine example of just how big it is compared to a man's head. I like this photo. The guy looks completely surprised to be standing in the jungle next to this gigantic mulberry cousin. cocoabean and I were pretty surprised to come across it in a grocery store. Heh.

You can eat jack fruit raw, but it tastes better cooked. I guess that's true because we didn't eat it raw. To cook it, you boil it to make the pulp soft and gooey. It smells rather like a mango and tastes rather like a mango with a bit of over-ripe banana thrown in. The cloying after-taste is what makes it really special. You can also eat the stringy stuff that encases the gooey stuff. I took a bite of that and spit it in the sink.

And the seeds......just roast them up and enjoy them like chestnuts. Merry Christmas. Or I guess you could stick them in soil and grow a new crop of jack fruit trees.

Just so you know....we are NOT serving jack fruit at the Great Javelina Hunt in Tombstone this year. Even though these giant mulberry cousins actually LOOK like javelinas in the right light, we will not be hunting them because they grow in the rain-rich forests of Asia. Tombstone is nothing like the rain-rich forests of Asia. So we will stick to posturing about like total dumb asses in our pursuit of some stinky wild pig cousin.

Haven't heard about Tombstone yet? Oh, my gosh! Go javelinahunt and do what you have to do to get thyself there as a participant!

Beanie moved into her place last night. We had a great road trip (see biggershoes for the adventures) and it was fun having her here this past week, but it's time for her to "land" in a spot and start that new life she has dreamed of for so long. I have never seen anyone more determined to make a change. Blessings to her and everything she dreams of accomplishing. She deserves this time.

Yuppers......

I applied for a really cool job at another museum before I left on the road trip. I found out yesterday that I came in #2. Too bad there are other things in this world identified as #2. Oh well........gotta shrug it off and move on. It must mean there is something better around another corner.
