Ahoy, ye scurvy dogs!

Scurvy Dogs

March 06, 2005

We did an interesting experiment with the kids at church today.

According to a legend that may or may not be true, in 1940, the king of Denmark ordered everyone in the country to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing when the Nazis invaded and made that demand of all Jews.

This act of solidarity greatly diminished the power of the Nazis in Denmark because they couldn't control the people.

The kids really thought long and hard about that story, and the discussion points were quite amazing. They were able to see a lot of connections to the plight of the Jews as well as things that are happening right now.

Of course, our art project was to make yellow Stars of David and pin them to our clothing. My group wanted to take a walk outside to see if the people in the neighborhood noticed them.

Indeed.

We got noticed.

But most people were WAY to uncomfortable to ask about the stars. People often stop and greet the kids when were are out and about on Sunday mornings. Not today. Even when we got back to the church, nobody really asked us what we were doing.

Interesting.

The power of a symbol.
